House at Bridge of Gairn
Set within the glen where the River Gairn meets the River Dee, this contemporary Scottish home is designed as a low-impact, future-proofed retreat that celebrates its remarkable Deeside setting. Inspired by Scandinavian simplicity and modern Scottish architecture, the single-level design embraces natural light, shelter, and connection to the landscape while remaining sensitive to neighbouring homes and the surrounding environment.
The client’s vision was clear and deeply personal: to create a home to retire to — a haven immersed in nature yet closely connected to the local community; “a step from the hills, a hop to the tennis court and a saunter to the village.” Designed to foster a true sense of belonging, the house reflects a lifelong appreciation of Scottish craftsmanship, landscape, and identity, creating a lasting legacy that proudly states it was “Made in Scotland.”
Crafted with sustainable, locally sourced materials including larch cladding, standing seam metal roofing, and high-performance timber windows, the home is designed to age gracefully with minimal maintenance. Thoughtful orientation, integrated solar panels, deep overhangs, and biodiversity-led landscaping work together to reduce energy use, encourage wildlife, and create a healthy, enduring place to live.
Rooted in a passion for environmental responsibility and inspired by the restorative power of nature, the project seeks to create a timeless home that harmonises with its surroundings while supporting wellbeing, biodiversity, and long-term sustainable living.B W Macintyre Architects Visual Animation
