Broomhill Studio
A small, considered, flexible studio space that punches beyond its size and won BWMA an award!.
The studio wraps around the wonderful willow tree that holds a very special place in our clients’ hearts. They were therefore delighted when BWMA responded to this, by making it a key part of the design, both physically and spiritually.
Local quarry dust paths and raised Corten steel planting beds connect the studio to its surroundings and contrast with the European larch cladding which was charred and coated with boiled linseed on site by our client.
This was a particular highlight which will live long in our memory. It meant our clients felt personally involved in the overall thinking and hands-on in the project’s creation . That camaraderie of working to create something forged between architect, engineer, contractor, and client was a joy to behold and a pleasure one too often lost in our industry.
Sometimes it’s the smallest of touches that make al the difference:
The lapped corner cladding - a nod to a Scandinavian style log cabin that also avoided material wastage
A galvanised chain drain that flowed into a local stone filled galvanised pot that in turn flowed into the land to keep the willow tree healthy.
The wider landscaping, planters and planting created a cohesive and enchanting escape within the garden our clients can enjoy for many years to come.
And the ‘pièce de résistance’. - the reuse of a 200 year old Rubislaw Quarry granite lintel as the entry step. Our client had been saving this for something special and my word did it find its rightful place.
